Farmers' markets are one of the oldest forms of direct marketing by small farmers.

In a farmers' market, a group of farmers sell their products once or twice a week at a designated public place like a park or parking lot. Shopping at a farmers' market is a great way to meet local farmers and get fresh, flavorful produce.

Farmers markets support a sustainable food system by offering regionally-grown produce. Small family farms stay in business; land is protected from development, and consumers receive fresh food that does not travel far. Many markets sell more than just fruits and vegetables, and include meats, wines, cheeses, flowers, herbs, baked goods, wool and hand-crafted items. These markets provide a direct link between the farmer and consumer, benefiting both.

Atlanta is lucky to have several hot spots for local growers.

Choose a different one each week.

Another great way to get local produce is to join a coop. You sign up with a farm and pay in advance. The farm knows how much to grow and then they will deliver the freshest produce directly a neighborhood farmers market. All you have to do is choose when and where you want to pick it up.

The farms deliver to different farmers markets on different days of the week. You can visit them by website for more details.

  Seasonal

When you purchase local foods in-season you are accomplishing three great things. You are eliminating the environmental damage caused by shipping foods thousands of miles, your money goes directly to the local economy via the local farmer, and your family will enjoy the health benefits of eating fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables. When you purchase produce seasonally you also provide your family an exciting opportunity to try new foods and to experiment with seasonal recipes. Besides all that it really does taste better than produce shipped across thousands of miles!

We have provided a list of produce grown in this region by month. Even if you don't want to change any of your eating habits, do your community and your family a service, buy local produce when it's available. Don’t purchase the same type of food from 3000 miles away!
